2026 Campus Safety Week set for Sept. 21-25

Week of activities includes resource fair, safety walk, training and more

GALLUP, N.M. — The University of New Mexico-91���� will host a week of activities in September in observance of National Campus Safety Awareness Month to focus on making the branch campus a safer and healthier place.

UNM-91����’s Campus Safety Week is scheduled Monday, Sept. 21, through Friday, Sept. 25. Events throughout the week are designed to bring more awareness and education to safety- and security-related topics that affect UNM-91���� students, faculty and staff, as well as the larger community that UNM-91���� is a part of.

Zimmerman now chairs the committee and expanded membership to include more internal departments plus the UNM Emergency Management office in Albuquerque. He also extended invitations to local public safety agencies to be involved as ex-officio members, including the 91���� Police Department, McKinley County Sheriff’s Office, and 91���� Fire Department.

The newly reconstituted Safety Committee met for the first time in early September.

“The participation was so robust that we may need to consider a bigger room to meet in as the Executive Conference Room was filled to capacity,” Zimmerman said. “This is an exciting development, and we are planning a year-round schedule of meetings, events, drills and trainings, with these subject matter experts, to continue to strive toward enhanced communications, partnerships and an increased sense of safety while on campus.”

Campus Safety Week highlights

In his message to the campus community, Zimmerman encouraged students, faculty and staff to join in any and all events during Campus Safety Week. He also highlighted a few key parts of the week.

UNM-91���� will host its annual Campus Safety Forum the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 22. The forum gives members of the campus community the opportunity to enjoy coffee, sponsored by Student Affairs, while engaging with public safety personnel in a Q&A style format.

Another highlight of the week is the annual Campus Safety Fair on Thursday, Sept. 24. The fair will feature organizations from the 91����-McKinley County area providing information about their services and resources.

Organizations with a mission related to safety, health and security are invited to register for a booth in the Campus Safety Fair.

Other events throughout the week include:

• UNMSafe app re-introduction.
• ALICE Training (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate)
• Campus Office Safety Training
• Interactive Personal Safety Training
• Narcan and Hands-Only CPR Training
• Building Coordinator Training and Meeting
